Commodity trading house Alkagesta has expanded its presence in Malta, shifting the Mediterranean island's traditional role from a regional bunkering stop into a global energy and commodity trading hub, according to a report by MaltaCEOs. Established in 2017 with an initial team of 11, the physical trading company originally set out to establish trade links connecting landlocked regions, particularly in Central Asia, with major Mediterranean marine hubs including Turkey, Greece, and Malta.

Alkagesta now operates through 17 offices and representations worldwide, maintaining active trading relationships across 42 countries supported by a 150-person workforce, as reported by MaltaCEOs. The firm's onshore operations in Malta receive physical shipments originating from Europe, Central Asia, North Africa, and the Americas to supply Mediterranean markets, while also managing ongoing arbitrage trade flows directed toward the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp region and locations East of Suez.

The trading house manages a physical commodity portfolio covering petroleum products, biofuels, and fertilizers. Within petroleum, Alkagesta focuses on heavy ends including straight-run refinery feedstocks, marine and utility fuels, and vacuum gasoils, while its middle distillates desk manages marine gasoil, heating gasoil, and ultra-low sulphur diesel. The company broadened its market reach in 2025 by expanding its light ends desk to handle gasoline and naphtha. Additionally, Alkagesta has engaged in fertilizer trading since 2019, supplying markets in Europe, Brazil, and India with products sourced from Central Asia and North Africa.

Alkagesta's operations span procurement, storage, multimodal logistics across rail, road, container, and maritime transport, as well as liquidity management alongside financial institutions, reported MaltaCEOs. In response to regional regulatory shifts, the trader assisted Mediterranean market participants in meeting International Maritime Organization marine fuel standards, including the 2020 global sulphur cap reduction to 0.5% and subsequent 2025 ultra-low sulphur fuel targets. Having initially focused on used cooking oil feedstock, Alkagesta has since secured status as an ISCC-certified trader with dedicated storage infrastructure to support its expanding biofuels activities.
