Global commodity trading group Alkagesta has been awarded the EcoVadis Committed Badge in recognition of its sustainable business practices across its trading portfolio, according to an official announcement from the company. Headquartered in Malta, the group operates across petroleum, fertilizers, biofuels, and steel markets in more than 48 countries. The award evaluates corporate performance against evidence-based sustainability criteria, assessing organizational transparency, operational policies, and reporting metrics across four core pillars: Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement.
The rating provider EcoVadis evaluates more than 130,000 businesses worldwide, offering badges and performance indicators that are widely applied across supply-chain sustainability screening. According to company statements reported by the firm, obtaining the badge establishes a structured framework for continuous operational improvement across Alkagesta's supply chains. The evaluation process systematically measures operational policies against internationally recognized standards, serving as an industry benchmark for energy and commodity traders.
The recognition complements the physical trader's existing environmental, social, and governance commitments within energy and refined product markets. Alkagesta maintains trading certifications under ISCC and CORSIA for sustainable aviation fuel operations, aligning with standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Furthermore, the group maintains operational access to carbon units within the EU Emissions Trading System, which operates under regulations maintained by the European Commission, alongside funding environmental research ventures such as the Clean Caspian startup.
Commenting on the assessment, Orkhan Rustamov, Chief Executive Officer of Alkagesta, stated that receiving the badge demonstrates internal efforts to integrate responsible practices into daily commercial activities rather than treating sustainability as an isolated agenda. Rustamov noted that as a trading enterprise handling commodities essential to the global economy, operating with integrity and transparency remains a core responsibility, adding that the company intends to use the rating as a baseline to further elevate standards across all assessed categories.
As sustainability reporting becomes increasingly essential across physical trading networks, major market intelligence outlets including Reuters and the Financial Times frequently highlight the role of third-party ESG credentials in commodity trade finance and supply chain management. The adoption of formal sustainability badges reflects a broader shift among independent energy houses seeking verified compliance across multi-commodity supply chains.
