Alkagesta Promotes Darren Axisa to Country Manager Malta to Lead Regional Platform

Alkagesta has promoted Darren Axisa to the post of Country Manager Malta as the Malta-headquartered energy and commodity trading house expands its Mediterranean operational footprint. Axisa, who joined Alkagesta as Operations Manager in June 2023, brings nearly two decades of experience across the island's maritime, inspection, and energy sectors. Prior to joining Alkagesta, he served for over thirteen years at Bureau Veritas in management and coordination roles following an earlier role as a surveyor at Saybolt beginning in 2007.

The group has maintained operations in Malta since its founding in 2018, expanding its local storage footprint to nearly 300,000 cubic metres across tank facilities at Evos Malta and Enemalta. The company utilizes this platform for product supply, quality correction, and regional logistics optimisation, supporting fuel oil bunkering, utility deliveries, and arbitrage flows spanning continental Europe, North Africa, and East of Suez. Alkagesta was also an early mover in supplying 0.1% sulphur fuel oil following the implementation of the Mediterranean Emission Control Area in 2025.

The trading group's operational portfolio extends beyond conventional marine fuels and local deliveries into international middle distillate supply chains and sustainable commodities. According to reporting by Maltatoday, Alkagesta secured a contract earlier this year to supply jet fuel through NATO's 5,000-kilometre Central European Pipeline System, delivering both conventional jet fuel and sustainable aviation fuel blends to major airports including Brussels and Frankfurt. The company also handles international exports of used cooking oil to support renewable fuel production.

Alkagesta's overall annual trading volumes expanded from approximately 5.2 million metric tonnes in 2023 to over 8.7 million metric tonnes in 2025, with total group revenues growing from around $3.1 billion to approximately $4.7 billion across the same timeframe, according to figures reported by Maltatoday. Direct operational and business expenditure by the group in Malta reached roughly €50 million in 2025, driving activity across port calls, pilotage, tug services, agency work, and maritime support services.
